Uncovering clearer outcomes

Uncovering the outcomes for a new piece of work by asking five questions.

What’s interesting?

  • Working with Panda Associates to support Bath and North East Somerset Council to rethink how they govern their Change Portfolio.

  • During the kick-off, we wanted to know what success would look like. People naturally want to offer a solution, e.g. “Success is a better system for managing xyz” or “Success is empowered teams.” All of these might be true, but what is the actual outcome? What changes?

  • By asking five simple questions, we got a better answer. The questions trick the brain into describing the change instead of jumping to a solution.

  • Once the outcomes are clear, it’s easy to measure progress by identifying and tracking leading and lagging indicators.
